In early years, teaching phonics is a method of teaching early reading and writing skills to children, based on linking the way words sound to how they're spelt.

In phonics in Owl Class we focus on:

  • developing children's listening skills, encouraging them to mimic and memorise musical and natural sounds, which form the basis of common words
  • improving pupils' ability to take separate letters and turn them into whole words e.g. understanding that c-a-t = cat
  • rhythm and rhyme
  • alliteration
