Reading for meaning is so important. We will be working on this throughout the year. Those who need support with their decoding skills will be learning key words and phonics and whole word reading approaches and being heard read extra times in school.
Most of the teaching of reading in school will be done through guided reading sessions. We will focus on fluency and expression which is key to reading for meaning.
Autumn 2 Update
We will try some extra approaches this term, echo reading and paired reading will follow on from teacher reading aloud. We will look at the 6 P's of reading fluency.
Pitch: The musicality of the reading voice –including tone and intonation.
What tone/intonation of the voice is needed for different characters? How do the features tell us how to read certain sections? (italics/bold).
Power: The strength given to the reading voice –including volume and stress.
Which words do we need to stress and why? How does this help us to better understand word meaning?
Pace: The speed and rhythm of what we read.
At what speed do we need to read this part? Is it fast-paced action?
Punctuation: The adherence to and understanding of the marks an author has placed upon the page.
Which reading ‘road signs’ do we have available to us when we read? What are they telling us?
Pause: The knowing of when not to read and for how long.
If a pause is needed, how long might we pause? What’s the difference between . , ? ;
Passion: The emotion of the reading
