Summer Term 2

This term we are going to be learning about significant scientists.

There is one for each area of the science curriculum we have covered in year 4.

Week Commencing 13th July

Washington Sheffield was an American Dentist.  In  the mid 1870's he invented a tooth creme, which was the first toothpaste in a tube. He was widely acclaimed as one of the the best dentists in the USA at the time.

As usual, have a look at the information provided in the power point or PDF and then carry out the toothpaste practical. If you don't have the  ingredients to make your own, you could test shop bought ones such as a child's toothpaste against an adult's one.

Week Commencing 6th July

This week we will be looking again at the work of Thomas Edison.

have a look at the powerpoint or PDF and find out about his other connections to electricity. Then go on an electricity hunt around your home.

Week Commencing 29th June

We will be learning about the work of Lord Kelvin. So we will be modelling how particles behave in solids, liquids and gases. If you would like to have a go at the activity, you will need some marbles or beads and a tray, so that you can position and move them about to show how particles behave in different states.

Lord Kelvin

Lord Kelvin was born in Ireland in 1824. He was named William Thomson, but he became better known as Lord Kelvin in later life.

Have a look at the information about Kelvin and absolute zero.

Record your practical activity on the particle model activity sheet.

There is a second activity, called scales of temperature, if you do this one choose which of the sheets to do, the one star or the 3 star, there's no need to do both!

Week Commencing 22nd June

Discovering Oxygen

Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier

If you would like to do the practical again this week you will need  small candles (like tealights or birthday candles) something to light them with and 3 glass jars of different sizes.

Learn about these scientists by reading the discovering oxygen PDF. Then you can do the practical activity. There are 3 different recording sheets on the oxygen and burning activity sheet.

Choose the 1* 2* or 3* to do, you don't need them all. If you can't do the practical activity there is a fact matching card sort to do instead.

Week Commencing 15th June

Maria Telkes

Maria Telkes made lots of discoveries to do with solar power so this week we are going to learn about her. If you have managed to collect the things to make a Solar Oven, that is the task you will do after learning about Maria Telkes on the Power point below.

If not, you can choose your own way to record what you have learned about her. this could be a fact-file, a power-point a poster.... or something else.

Week Commencing 8th June

Gerald Durrell

Gerald Durrell lived in Madagascar, he was a conservationist who worked hard to save Madagascar's unique plants
and animals. Read the information about Madagascar, it is a fascinating island. the practical activity that you may have saved bits and peieces for shows you about the effects of deforestation. If you haven't been able to collect any things to do it with, don't worry, you will still be able to learn about it. there is a different task that you can do about the unique plants and animals of Madagascar. You don't have to do both o f the activities, you can choose one !

Week Commencing 1st June

Alexander Graham Bell

You will research about Alexander Graham Bell then you can make a poster about him under the given headings, or if you like you could make a video presentation or a power point instead.

I have attached lots of documents to help you.

Summer Term

Living things and their Habitats.

Our new science topic is about living things, the first session is to find out what makes living things 'alive'.  What is it about plants and animals that means they are living?

Week 1

MRS GREN

The features of living things can be remembered by using MRS GREN. Look at the information below to find out what makes living things alive. The power point and the PDF file are the same, I have just put it in 2 different formats so that hopefully everyone can open it on their devices.

Activities for sorting living things.

Remember that you don't have to print out the sheets, you can use them to show you what to do, you can write the names and or draw the animals in the correct circles.

Week 2

This week we will learn about habitats. A habitat is the place where an animal lives and it is suited to them. Animals are adapted to live in their own habitat and the food water and shelter they need is available to them there. Your lesson this week about habitats is all in the power-point or PDF below. (They are both the same, just choose one.)

Look at it and follow the instructions in there. The first page tells you if there is anything special you will need for the lesson.

Week 3

This week we will learn about classifying Living things. We sort and classify living things based upon the features that they have.  In this session you will learn how to sort living things using questions to identify their features.

Your lesson this week about classification is all in the power-point or PDF below. (They are both the same, just choose one.)

Look at it and follow the instructions in there. The first page tells you if there is anything special you will need for the lesson.

Week 4

This week we will learn about local habitats. You will need to do this on a day when you can get outside into the garden. You will be looking at the plants and animals you can find living there. The Power point and PDF will take you through the lesson. (They are both the same, just choose one.)

Look at it and follow the instructions in there. The first page tells you if there is anything special you will need for the lesson.

Week 5

This week we will learn about Food Chains. Food chains explain how animals get their energy and how it is passed from one creature to the next. The Power point and PDF will take you through the lesson. (They are both the same, just choose one.)

Look at it and follow the instructions in there. The first page tells you if there is anything special you will need for the lesson.

Week 6

This week we will learn about environmental change. This can be seasonal changes or changes caused by human activities. The Power point and PDF will take you through the lesson. (They are both the same, just choose one.)

Look at it and follow the instructions in there. The first page tells you if there is anything special you will need for the lesson.

Spring Term

Science

As we have been learning about electricity and making our own circuits we will have to continue the practicals when we return, so in the meantime I have found some online games that you can try this week.

Click on the link below to learning Wales website, there are some simple circuits to make by dragging the components into the box with the battery. It was a little tricky to start with, but it does work. Persevere with it and have fun!
