Code club 1

Here you will find all the code club work from group 1, who took part in code club from January- February 2023.

Week 1

Our very first week of Code Club! Miss Houldridge challenged us to free the tortoise from the maze using the Bebras UK website. It was so tricky! We found out there were secret passage ways and we struggled to find out where they were. Once we found out where they were, we then had to code the tortoise to get through them and reach the flag.

After this, we got to choose our own challenge. Some of us decided to party using the disco turtle; we had to code the turtle to change colour as it moved.

Some of us went for the extreme level and tried to code a spiral pattern and then we tried to change the colour of the spiral as we drew it. See below for some pictures of what me managed to achieve on week 1.

Week 2

In week 2, we started our Scratch programming. We created a rock band! By the end of the session, we were able to:

  • Add backgrounds
  • Add a range of sprites
  • Make different musical sounds at the same or at different times using the space bar and different keys of our choice.
  • Add signing and other voice sounds to last for a short amount of time or for the entirety of the act.
  • Change the look or movement of some characters

See some of our work below:

Week 3

This week, we created a ghostbusters game! We had to create a game that meant the ghosts disappeared when we clicked on them. We would get a point for each ghost we clicked on within the time.

In this session we were able to:

  • Add a sprite
  • Add a background
  • Create two different codes for the same sprite
  • Use motion, looks, sounds, events, controls and variable blocks
  • Make our own variables
  • Problem solve and debug
  • Take initiative and change the style or alter the game to make it our own.

Week 4

In Week 4, we created a chatbot (a talking robot). We coded our sprite using variables, senses and operators. Our codes are getting much more complex but we were able to follow the instructions carefully and debug when things went wrong. A lot of us are getting much quicker and much more confident with our coding now.

Week 5

In our penultimate week, we used Tinkercad to create our own 3D models. We could choose anything and we were able to toggle our view, zoom in and out, lift objects up and down, recolour objects and create our own blocks. This helped us to see how game creators build settings and characters ready to code in games. Below are some of our creations:

Week 6

Our final week of code club was by far our hardest week! We used Tinkercad to code! We had to build and code a rocket to launch into space! This was great fun and we were very successful! Below are the videos of the rockets all launching. You can see the children changed the colours and shapes of some of their rockets too.
