Mindfulness

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose, in the present moment to our thoughts, emotions and physical feelings and the immediate environment.

Many factors in everyday life cause us stress and anxiety, we carry these with us. We can become stressed about things that have happened, or things that might happen in the future, often these influence how we react in the present moment. Mindfulness is about learning how to let these things go and enjoy, or be calm in, the present moment.

Children are being taught skills and strategies to:

  • reduce stress and anxiety levels,
  • relax their bodies and clear their minds,
  • pay attention to the positive things in their lives and heighten their gratitude,
  • let go of negative feelings and making peace with situations that have been resolved,
  • acknowledge the way some situations are and accept their feelings,
  • develop resilience in dealing with difficulties.
