Academic Year 2018/19
Welcome to Woodpecker Class
We are a class of year 4 children, taught by Mrs Wilson and supported by Mrs Needham. Come along and see what fabulous things we get up to in year 4
It is suggested that you spend around 1 hour per week completing homework with your child. If you find that you are unable to complete the homework within this time, please do not feel that you must exceed this time.
Your child will be tested on their spellings every Friday. New spellings will then be stuck into their homework book. Once they have learnt their spellings your child can use the page in the book to practise using that spelling in a sentence, if you have time.
Your child will be tested on their mental calculations every Friday. There is a range of 16 differentiated sheets of varying amounts of questions for your child to complete in an allocated time. This can also be sent home for you to practice with your child ready for their challenge in school. They are a mixture of multiplication and divisions questions. By the end of this year the children need to be able to recall and use all multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12.
Your child will be heard read at least once a week in school by an adult, either as part of group reading or individually. Children are asked to read 4 x per week, as in the school policy. It is important for your child to read aloud to you, even if they are competent readers, so that you can question their understanding of what they have read. Your child should change their own book once they have read it, they have been shown how to do this. Please spend a little time talking with your child about the book and what has happened so far, what they predict might happen next, and check their understanding of the text.
On completion of a book your child will be given a ‘ I have just read..’ sheet to complete, this will require them to summarise the story and characters, to check they have taken in what they have read We will help them with this as required.
Please ensure your child’s book is available in school every day.
On Friday there will usually be a piece of either topic, science, literacy or maths based work for your child to complete or research relating to what has been learnt or will be learned in class.
Please could this be returned by the following Friday.
P.E will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ensure that your child has their kit in school on these days. It may be wise to have a pair of joggers too, as the weather gets colder, as we will usually have some of the sessions outside.
Please feel free to come and see me if you have any concerns or questions, I will be happy to help.
Spring Term 2019
This term our topic is the Rain forest. We will learn about the plants and animals that live there and how they are suited to the climate they live in. Our work will link to our English in the books and films that we study as well as to the geography and science topics.
In the second half of the term we will have a visit from Sam's Safari to meet some of the unusual creatures.
We will also have the opportunity to work with Coach Mark again in the second half of the term and try our hands at archery. Watch this space for photographs!
Practice Times Tables Online!
Times tables Rock stars is an online game that the school has bought into to help you to help your child become fluent in rapid recall of times tables facts.
I have set the children up with a password, this will be stuck into their homework book so they can log in any time at home.
There are fun games with a graded approach. The 'Garage' is where skills can be practiced and 'Arena' where it is still graded but introducing an element of competition.
If your child is ready to practice all the times tables, there are 2 other areas on the site to visit, 'Studio' and 'Festival'. Studio is designed to build up speed, and 'Festival' is designed for competing against others.
Attached below are the links to the site and digital copies of the parent guide and the scatter tables that you can use at home to help your child to maximise their success.
Academic Year 2016/17
This term we are learning about the Vikings.
We will find out about where they came from and why, about their lifestyles and will be visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre as part of the topic.
Spring Term 2017
Happy New Year!
Welcome to the Jungle !
Or perhaps, more accurately the Rainforest.
This term we will be learning all about the rain forests, their location and climate, the plants and animals that live there and how they are adapted to their specific habitat.
We are looking forward to a visit from Sam's Safari's in February so that we can meet a selection of creatures who are right at home in the rainforest.
